My Parosmia Story

My life with parosmia due to a virus

since May of 2019 (Pre-Covid)

Summary of my parosmia story:

My story started in May of 2019, when I was very sick with an upper respiratory virus. This was before anything with Covid has started.

I noticed that I couldn't smell or taste anything. I thought this was odd. Then some things started to smell strange and taste disgusting. I never experienced anything like this before.

Over the next 3-4 months, I went to 3 different doctors, each with a different diagnosis and I had a CT scan which didn't show any problems. I was given no treatment plan from the doctors and I was told nothing could be done and it should get better on its own with time.

After doing my own research online, I learned that I had anosmia, which is smell loss and later it developed into parosmia, a distorted sense of smell.

Then Covid started in March of 2020. Some people who had Covid were saying that they were having the same symptoms of anosmia and parosmia.

In April of 2021, I still had parosmia but I felt like I lost my sense of smell again and then I tested positive for Covid. So, I started over again with anosmia and parosmia.

What it is like living with parosmia:

Parosmia effects every part of your life. It is the loss of 2 of the 5 senses. So it could be considered an invisible disability.+

At first, I noticed it was mostly food that smelled really bad and tasted disgusting.

The worst foods for me are; coffee, Coke & Pepsi, peanut butter, chocolate, all citrus, eggs, garlic, onions, anything fried, greasy food, and most meat. Cooking meat in any manner (grilled, baked, fried...) smells disgusting. It's difficult for me to cook or even be in the same environment with food that is being cooked. Because of this, I'm limited in what I'm able to eat. Although, I do eat a lot of sugary and salty foods because I could always taste these basic tastes. So my diet is totally not healthy.

Then, I noticed other things that started to smell wrong. Cleaning products like dish washing soap, laundry detergent and bath & body care products like hand soap, shampoo, lotion, perfume were all terrible. Unscented and fragrance free weren't any better. Even toothpaste smell and taste repulsive. It's just such a strange condition.

Boiling water has a smell, cold air has a smell, car exhaust smells wrong, the fast food drive-thru smell awful. Clean laundry smells bad. Hugging someone smells bad, either because of their clean clothes or their perfume. Shopping, restaurants, other people's houses are not enjoyable anymore.

It is difficult to explain the smells. Some people with this condition say things smell like something rotten or spoiled, sewage, sulfur, garbage, smoke, vomit and even decaying, dead bodies.

The rancid smells and tastes can be different for everyone and it's constantly changing. One week something will taste bad, the next week it might not be as bad and then it could get really bad again.

It is nauseating and at times gives me migraines that will last most of the day. Sometimes, I wake up with a headache just from breathing through my nose while sleeping.

It is very depressing and isolating. I can't go anywhere without the awful smells. Nobody can understand because it sounds so bizarre when I try to explain it. Even doctors don't know much about it. They say is should get better over time but it can last for many months or years. There is no cure at this time.

My Parosmia Diary
before
and during the
Covid-19 pandemic

This is my story and my observations

I am not a medical professional and

I do not give medical advice.

(Doctor's names have been omitted for privacy)

  • It all started with an upper respiratory virus (a common cold, or so I thought) at the beginning of May 2019.

  • 5-31-2019 Dr. A - visit, diagnosed with bronchitis, prescribed medication.

  • 6-14-2019 Dr. B - visit, She diagnosed me with allergic rhinitis (allergies) and said it would take time to feel better. She prescribed allergy medication, a nasal spray and a maximum strength cough suppressant and said to take it for 1 month.

Note: I never had allergies in the past. Sometime between the start of the virus and now, the anosmia and parosmia started. I could breath clearly. I had no congestion, no runny nose, no sneezing, no cough. I just couldn't taste or smell anything.

I kept going back to the doctor because I desperately needed some answers. I was getting worried.

  • 7-30-2019 Dr. C - visit, I told Dr. C about the anosmia and parosmia. He said it is not allergies and I might have nerve damage from the virus. He diagnosed me with chronic sinusitis and prescribed a penicillin.

  • 8-12-2019 Dr. C - visit, "nothing medically can be done", but ordered a CT scan. He did mention something about smelling certain aromatherapy essential oils. But he didn't elaborate on this type of treatment.

  • 9-26-2019 CT scan shows no problems.

By this time, I felt that not being able to smell was better then smelling all the rotting, burning, garbage, chemical odors. I did some research and found a few online support groups, which was so comforting for me to know that there were other people who understood this confusing condition. In a support group there was information about smell training. I bought the suggested essential oils and jars to make my own kit. Parosmia made those oils smell distorted.

January 2020

  • Dr. C - visit, I took a list of parosmia problems give the doctor an example of what I'm living with. Dr. had no help to offer.

February 2020

  • Acupuncture Dr. D - visit, didn't help. She didn't know much about parosmia. (The coffee at the receptionist's desk had a strong, awful smell that permeated throughout the whole office.)

March 2020

  • Covid-19 closed everything.

  • Worldwide pandemic and quarantine.

  • No more doctor visits for the rest of the year.

Summery: 4 different medical professional opinions, various medications, CT scan, acupuncture.

2020 ~ Anosmia (loss of smell and taste) became a symptom for Covid-19

Midnight Ramblings

It's 4 a.m. and I can't sleep because I'm so hungry. My body aches because I'm so hungry.

I lay here thinking about what I used to eat for a quick snack when I was hungry but I can't eat it anymore because most food tastes disgusting.

What can I eat when I get out of bed... Dry cereal like usual and hope it's tolerable?

Gone are the days of bacon and eggs with coffee and orange juice.

Fried Eggs

Kinda funny (but not really).

I've been living in my current house for around 1 1/2 years, the whole time with parosmia. I finally realized what the strange bad smell emanating from the earth in my back yard is actually

- The Burger King - at the end of my street. Obviously, it's the smell of flame broiled burgers, but not obvious to me.
